Whitby Abbey (owned by English Heritage) dominates the East Cliff of Whitby Harbour. Famous for hosting the Synod at Whitby at which the calculation for Easter was finally defined. Some of the more modern history is still established in the winding streets of this still working fishing town.

Hogwarts Express

For Harry Potter fans, the Hogwarts express in real life runs from Grosmont to Pickering. The station you will remember Harry and co alighting at is in fact Goathland. The steam train runs for most of the year (for details see their website) and is a great way to see some of the beautiful moorland, or simply enjoy a day steaming up and down. You can even catch the occasional steam train into Whitby.

The Railway

For those of you for whom the celebrity status is not the draw, it is still great to experience a past age by travelling on one of the trains. Why not combine it with a picnic and walk between two of the stations, or visit Pickering or some of the other stops. The railway passes through the Esk valley below Sleights in the summer on the way to Whitby station, so you may even see the steam train.

Byland

Byland Abbey

Byland was one of the great Yorkshire Cistercian abbeys, housing at its zenith well over 200 monks and lay brothers. Much of its huge cathedral-sized church survives, including the whole north side and the greater part of the 13th-century west front.

Kirkham

The riverside ruins of an Augustinian priory, picturesquely set in the beautiful Derwent valley near the Yorkshire Wolds. Beck Isle Museum of Rural Life

The Beck Isle Museum is housed in a handsome Regency residence near the centre of Pickering, adjacent to the Pickering Beck, a stream that flows under a four arched road bridge. One arch of this bridge (originally much narrower) is reputedly of mediaeval origin.

The collection is not restricted to a particular period of interest, it aims to reflect the local life and customs and to trace many of the developments in social and domestic life during the last 200 years.
