The Doctor Will See You Now (Doctor and the Medics)
Jul 21 @ 7:30 pm
The Doctor Will See You Now (Doctor and the Medics) @ Whitby Pavillion | England | United Kingdom

The Doctor Will See You Now

Wednesday 21 July 2021

The Doctor Will See You Now-Life as a one hit wonder!

A socially distanced show that’s ready to go!

The Rev Dr Clive Thomas Jackson, singer of Doctor and the Medics, combines all the elements of his career in one hilarious rollercoaster of a two man show.

Stories, Songs, Myths and more, humorously delivered by the one hit wonder.

Stand-up comic, compere, actor and yes singer! All these disciplines are bought together in a multimedia presentation of his often bizarre, certainly idiosyncratic and at times, ridiculously funny career.

The first half of the show covers his time from civil servant, spending his days sleeping at his desk due to his late night DJing, running his own club and band, through to international number 1 recording artist with “Spirit in the Sky”.

The second half covers the most unlikely comeback of all time! From mixing cement in the rain in November on a building site – just 18 months after reaching number 1 – through to being a snail farmer, joiner, model maker and blacksmith (some of his work includes the renovation of Windsor Castle and the entrance canopy of the Ritz Hotel in London). From here, we follow the band’s resurgence from barely glowing embers at the end of the 90’s to their busiest year in 2019 for over 30 years.

The show features a well-balanced mix of dialogue, music and audience interaction along with back projections of band images through the years against a backdrop of suitably psychedelic Medic imagery.

The music is a smorgasbord of songs from the bands career, including some that have not been played live for 30 years, laced with some of their best cover versions and ending in a sing along, get up and dance (If allowed!) finale.

Tickets: £20 & £18 (Concessions) *plus booking fees

Egton Bridge Gooseberry Show
Aug 3 @ 2:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Egton Bridge, eight miles from Whitby in the North York Moors National Park, is the setting for the oldest surviving gooseberry show in the country, established in 1800.

The 2021 show (fingers crossed) will be on Tuesday 3rd August (it is always the first Tuesday in August).

It is with regret that the Egton Bridge Old Gooseberry Society committee has reached the inevitable conclusion that the 2020 edition of the oldest gooseberry show in the world has to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The safety of our members and visitors is our principle priority and we can see no way to even hold a ‘socially distanced’ show. We are confident that we will be flooded with tales of monster berries robbed of their moment of glory, it is amazing how berries that never make it to the show are the largest ever grown.

We wish all our members, supporters and friends best wishes, stay safe and tend those bushes with all the TLC they richly deserve. We would

The Gods have definitely shone upon us in recent years, but no matter, whatever the weather decides to do there is always plenty of entertainment on hand for the entire family.

Thornton le Dale is rightly the most popular show in the locality and considered to be the best and friendliest of the County’s traditional rural shows. The Show is not only the high spot in the annual calendar for locals, but it also acts as the focal point for our many friends throughout the country, and indeed further afield, who return year after year to renew acquaintances on Showday. As a festival we have worked tirelessly with our artists and Bridlington Spa to ensure a safe and secure in person event for this year however, the recent government announcement has meant that this is no longer viable for our timescales.

We can reveal that an online programme of creativity and activities are underway and will be unveiled very soon with an additional ‘ArtWaves spin off’ set to be staged in the summer alongside the independent galleries of Bridlington.

This is not the way we wanted to deliver the event but we’re hopeful that our artists can inspire you to get creative still and explore the offerings.

Whitby Regatta
Aug 21 – Aug 23 all-day
Whitby Regatta @ Various Locations | Whitby | England | United Kingdom

Come and join us for three full days of entertainment for all the family to enjoy, including yacht racing, rowing races, fun fair and various free forms of entertainment around the town of Whitby, finishing with a prize presentation and spectacular firework display!

History of the Event

This event is one of the oldest sea Regattas in England drawing large crowds into the town. It all started in early the 1800s with fishermen competing against each other in their fishing smacks and salmon cobbles. Gradually yacht racing formed the greater part of the Regatta and was recorded in 1847 with “he Whitby Challenge Cup”.
Due to the high cost of building these large yachts they have slowly disappeared from the scene and in about 1872 competitive rowing came to the forefront. Today one of the main attractions of the Regatta are the three major rowing clubs in the region – the Jet Works Amateur Rowing Club, the Friendship Amateur Rowing Club and Whitby Fisherman’s Amateur Rowing Club.

The most coveted trophy rowed for today is the Wilson Cup, presented by the late Alderman JET Wilson J.P – C.C. of West Hartlepool in 1901. 1929 saw the first fancy dress and decorated carts, which form the present day’s regatta and carnival.

One hundred and seventy four years of aquatic competition and entertainment. The Whitby Regatta is probably the oldest sea Regatta on the northeast coast and has drawn large crowds into Whitby over the years.
