Egton Bridge Gooseberry Show
Aug 3 @ 2:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Egton Bridge, eight miles from Whitby in the North York Moors National Park, is the setting for the oldest surviving gooseberry show in the country, established in 1800.

The 2021 show (fingers crossed) will be on Tuesday 3rd August (it is always the first Tuesday in August).

It is with regret that the Egton Bridge Old Gooseberry Society committee has reached the inevitable conclusion that the 2020 edition of the oldest gooseberry show in the world has to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The safety of our members and visitors is our principle priority and we can see no way to even hold a ‘socially distanced’ show. We are confident that we will be flooded with tales of monster berries robbed of their moment of glory, it is amazing how berries that never make it to the show are the largest ever grown.

We wish all our members, supporters and friends best wishes, stay safe and tend those bushes with all the TLC they richly deserve. We would

Whitby Regatta
Aug 21 – Aug 23 all-day
Whitby Regatta @ Various Locations | Whitby | England | United Kingdom

Come and join us for three full days of entertainment for all the family to enjoy, including yacht racing, rowing races, fun fair and various free forms of entertainment around the town of Whitby, finishing with a prize presentation and spectacular firework display!

History of the Event

This event is one of the oldest sea Regattas in England drawing large crowds into the town. It all started in early the 1800s with fishermen competing against each other in their fishing smacks and salmon cobbles. Gradually yacht racing formed the greater part of the Regatta and was recorded in 1847 with “he Whitby Challenge Cup”.
Due to the high cost of building these large yachts they have slowly disappeared from the scene and in about 1872 competitive rowing came to the forefront. Today one of the main attractions of the Regatta are the three major rowing clubs in the region – the Jet Works Amateur Rowing Club, the Friendship Amateur Rowing Club and Whitby Fisherman’s Amateur Rowing Club.

The most coveted trophy rowed for today is the Wilson Cup, presented by the late Alderman JET Wilson J.P – C.C. of West Hartlepool in 1901. 1929 saw the first fancy dress and decorated carts, which form the present day’s regatta and carnival.

One hundred and seventy four years of aquatic competition and entertainment. The Whitby Regatta is probably the oldest sea Regatta on the northeast coast and has drawn large crowds into Whitby over the years.

Robin Hoods Bay Victorian Weekend
Dec 3 – Dec 5 all-day

Robin Hoods VictorianFrom the 2017 programme

The festive, family fun weekend will feature a mix of new and established events in the village’s quaint, cobbled, car free streets.

The weekend has always been popular for its many visitors dressed in Victorian attire. New for 2017 is the price of a free two night stay for two in Robin Hood’s Bay (thefernsuite.com) for the best dressed visitor.

The Victoria Hotel will be hosting the third Baytown beer Festival featuring all the local company’s smugglers’ ales and spirits.

Carol singing and live music will featu

re prominently throughout the weekend, starting with the switch on of ‘Bayilluminations’ in the dock on Friday evening.

Family fun will include traditional games like splat the rat. There will also be beach games and street entertainment. Ghost and Smugglers walks will also feature.

Event coordinator Bev Rutherfordsays: “We are planning a refreshed event which captures the Victorian spirit of Robin Hood’s Bay. Walking between old cottages through narrow, pedestrian only streets surrounded by people in Victorian costume can really transport you back in time. It’s an atmosphere that cannot be found elsewhere.

“Combine seasonal gift shopping with the many traditional events like ‘balls down the bank’ and the RNLI duck race and it’s clear Robin Hood’s Bay Victorian Weekend is an unmissable Christmas destination for all the family”.

Lions Boxing Day Dip
Dec 26 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am
Lions Boxing Day Dip @ Bandstand, Whitby

When the weather outside is frightful, does a dip in the sea sound delightful?

It has become somewhat of a tradition in our beautiful little seaside town to enjoy a rather refreshing dip in the North Sea on Boxing Day morning. After all, what better way to cure your late festive blues than participating in the fun and friendly charity event in aid of a charity close to your heart and Whitby Lions which support many local community charities and good causes?

This fun and frantic event has now been running over the last 46 years, seeing numbers soar from a handful of brave local citizens to over 150 eager individuals travelling from far and wide, desperate to run into the wintry ice-cold waves of the North Sea. Although as you’d expect, you are more likely to see the big numbers witnessing the excitement from the side-lines.

The intention is of course that the Boxing Day Dippers get sponsored, with 80% of funds raised donated to the charity of their choice and the remaining 20% helping many local charities which are supported by Whitby District Lions each year. It is also a great opportunity to raise money for a special charity close to your heart to say thank you for all their efforts and support during the year. The Boxing Day has become a traditional family friendly event with many families meeting up after Christmas Day to spending a lovely Boxing Day morning together.

2017 saw over nearly £10,000.00 raised, with this year hoping to raise even more funds for local causes. The event kicks off at 10 AM on Boxing Day morning, with registration and fancy-dress judging taking place at the Bandstand, followed by a casual jog into the sea.

Registration and sponsor forms available from the following local business:

15 Station Square,

Burton Agnes Snowdrops in the Woodland
Jan 30 – Feb 28 all-day
Burton Agnes Snowdrops in the Woodland @ Burton Agnes Hall | Driffield | England | United Kingdom

This winter, let the Snowdrop Spectacular at Burton Agnes Hall bring you out of hibernation

Wrap up warmly this winter and enjoy the breathtaking display of snowdrops here.

Every February, thousands of hardy snowdrops push through the cold winter ground to create a magnificent ‘white carpet’ across the woodland floor here at Burton Agnes. Walking peacefully among these makes a truly memorable day out at the end of the long winter. The beautiful little flowers grow in numbers each year and are such a welcome sight. This biblical symbol of hope reminds us that winter eventually gives way to spring, and announces the new season.

Galanthophiles may also like to buy some Burton Agnes-propagated snowdrops ‘in the green’, which is the best way of building a collection.

Please note that in gale force winds the woodland walk will close. Please phone the office on 01262 490 324 if you would like advice.

The woodland is open for walking among the snowdrops from the 30th January to 28th February 2021, from 11am to 4pm daily.

The Whitby Pet Shop,

15 Station Square,

Whitby
