North York Moors WalkFest

WalkFest 2022

Join us over a spring weekend for the return of our walking festival and enjoy a great programme of guided themed walks in some very special places.

Saturday 28 May –  Sunday 29 May 2022

This year, WalkFest celebrates the 70th anniversary of the North York Moors National Park, with a series of walks following the coastal stretches of the Cleveland Way National Trail, giving you a chance to walk linear stretches of the trail (with transport provided). There will also be a special walk delving into the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Byland, a significant but largely forgotten battle at Sutton Bank.

Booking details for the walks will be available early in 2022.

Bookings and information

Advance bookings and payment are essential for all WalkFest walks unless otherwise stated below. Book your tickets online.

No refunds will be given unless the event is cancelled by the organisers or there are exceptional circumstances. For further information, call 01439 772738.

  • Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Sorry no dogs, although dogs on short leads are welcome on many of our other guided walks organised throughout the year.
  • Appropriate clothing and footwear is essential. It’s also your responsibility to choose walks appropriate to your ability and experience – participation will be at the final discretion of the walk leader.
  • Please note that stated finish times for all walks are for guidance only and although every endeavour is made to finish on time, occasionally external factors, such as the weather, can have an influence.

Whitby Regatta
Aug 13 – Aug 15 all-day
Whitby Regatta @ Various Locations | Whitby | England | United Kingdom

Come and join us for three full days of entertainment for all the family to enjoy, including yacht racing, rowing races, fun fair and various free forms of entertainment around the town of Whitby, finishing with a prize presentation and spectacular firework display!

History of the Event

This event is one of the oldest sea Regattas in England drawing large crowds into the town. It all started in early the 1800s with fishermen competing against each other in their fishing smacks and salmon cobbles. Gradually yacht racing formed the greater part of the Regatta and was recorded in 1847 with “he Whitby Challenge Cup”.
Due to the high cost of building these large yachts they have slowly disappeared from the scene and in about 1872 competitive rowing came to the forefront. Today one of the main attractions of the Regatta are the three major rowing clubs in the region – the Jet Works Amateur Rowing Club, the Friendship Amateur Rowing Club and Whitby Fisherman’s Amateur Rowing Club.

The most coveted trophy rowed for today is the Wilson Cup, presented by the late Alderman JET Wilson J.P – C.C. of West Hartlepool in 1901. 1929 saw the first fancy dress and decorated carts, which form the present day’s regatta and carnival.

One hundred and seventy four years of aquatic competition and entertainment. The Whitby Regatta is probably the oldest sea Regatta on the northeast coast and has drawn large crowds into Whitby over the years.

8th North York Moors Cycle Challenge
Oct 2 @ 8:00 am
8th North York Moors Cycle Challenge @ Fylingdale Village Hall | Robin Hood's Bay | England | United Kingdom

North Yorkshire Moors Coastal Cycle Challenge

In memory of Norman Scholes

The NYMCCC did not take place in 2019 and unfortunately the ongoing Covid19 situation has meant we have been unable to organise an event since then. If we get back on track further details including an application form will be available on this site NYMCCC.UK next spring for an event with a tentative date of Sunday October 2nd 2022.

For some years the NYMCCC has been an annual cycle ride starting from Fylingdales Village Hall at the top of Robin Hood’s Bay. It follows the Cinder Track (old railway line) to Whitby and returns past the start point, then via Ravenscar, to the outskirts of Scarborough. The return route from Scarborough leaves the track at Ravenscar and follows the road for a short climb to Stoupe Brow mast, the highest point in the area, the road then drops down to re-join the track and continues to finish and refreshments at Fylingdales Village Hall. The event is not a race and the challenge is to complete the 38 mile ride. The track, as the name suggests, is mostly surfaced with cinders, it can be a little bumpy and muddy in parts after rain, there are some lengthy climbs, but none too steep as it was formerly a railway line.

Entry fee £12 which includes a certificate for all completions and a medal for under 6 hours.

Robin Hoods Bay Victorian Weekend
Dec 1 – Dec 3 all-day

Robin Hoods VictorianFrom the 2017 programme

The festive, family fun weekend will feature a mix of new and established events in the village’s quaint, cobbled, car free streets.

The weekend has always been popular for its many visitors dressed in Victorian attire. New for 2017 is the price of a free two night stay for two in Robin Hood’s Bay (thefernsuite.com) for the best dressed visitor.

The Victoria Hotel will be hosting the third Baytown beer Festival featuring all the local company’s smugglers’ ales and spirits.

Carol singing and live music will featu

re prominently throughout the weekend, starting with the switch on of ‘Bayilluminations’ in the dock on Friday evening.

Family fun will include traditional games like splat the rat. There will also be beach games and street entertainment. Ghost and Smugglers walks will also feature.

Event coordinator Bev Rutherfordsays: “We are planning a refreshed event which captures the Victorian spirit of Robin Hood’s Bay. Walking between old cottages through narrow, pedestrian only streets surrounded by people in Victorian costume can really transport you back in time. It’s an atmosphere that cannot be found elsewhere.

“Combine seasonal gift shopping with the many traditional events like ‘balls down the bank’ and the RNLI duck race and it’s clear Robin Hood’s Bay Victorian Weekend is an unmissable Christmas destination for all the family”.

Lions Boxing Day Dip
Dec 26 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am
Lions Boxing Day Dip @ Bandstand, Whitby

Whitby Boxing Day Dip 2021

Whitby Lion’s Boxing Day Dip is back for 2021! Are you crazy or brave enough to run into the North Sea on Boxing Day for charity?

It has become somewhat of a tradition in our beautiful little seaside town to enjoy a rather refreshing dip in the North Sea on Boxing Day morning. It’s certainly a unique and memorable experience that will raise lots of money for local charities. Fancy dress is a must, for many dippers, with prizes available for the best! In previous years, we have had some fantastic costumes such as dinosaurs, Batman and Robin, Christmas trees and even a team of traffic cones and a fancy dress wedding proposal!

This year due to Covid it will be operated under a different format whereby the participants pay a £10 entry fee; this will be paid direct to Whitby Lion’s. Participants can still raise sponsorship for their chosen charity, with 100% of the money they raise going to the charity/organisation of their choice. Please note, that if the participants require a sponsor form, Whitby Lion’s will still issue one. However, unlike previous years the participant will fully be responsible for distributing their sponsor money to their chosen charity. Whitby Lion’s will not collect everyone’s sponsorship money and then distribute it. This is due to the unknow circumstances of covid and any future restrictions on any large events.

This fun and frantic event has now been running over the last 47 years, originally seeing numbers soar from a handful of brave local citizens to over 160 eager individuals travelling from far and wide, desperate to run into the wintery ice-cold waves of the North Sea. Although as you’d expect, you are more likely to see the big numbers witnessing the excitement from the side-lines. The Boxing Day has become a traditional family friendly event with many families meeting up after Christmas Day to spending a lovely Boxing Day morning together.

Our 2019 dip had a record-breaking response with over 200 dippers taking part and at least a thousand spectators supporting the event and joining in with the fun. As a result, the club raised over £14,000.00 for various local and national charities. We also featured on national television with BBC Breakfast filming live at the event on Boxing Day morning. We hope for an equally successful event this year and we hope the local community comes out support ourselves, our dippers and the many charities involved.

To register for the dip, please either sign up using the PayPal link below then we will email a sponsor form to you or you can register and pay at The Whitby Pet Shop,15 Station Square Whitby and collect a sponsor form. You can also register and pay on the day by credit/debit card or cash at the registration tent at the bandstand. To keep up to date for the latest event information please visit the Whitby Lions Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages.

The club would again like to thank everyone who enters, volunteers and especially The Whitby Pet Shop for taking the time to register our dippers, Esk Valley Coaches and their staff who kindly volunteer their coaches each year and Whitby Diving Club who help to ensure the safety of our dippers.

Event Information

All dippers MUST be registered to take part as our insurance does not cover anyone who is not registered.

After purchasing your event entry either through this website or at The Whitby Pet Shop, you still need to register on the day at our registration tent. This ensures we know how many people are doing the dip for safety reasons. You can still sign up for the event on the morning by going to our registration tent and paying the £10 entry fee by either credit/debit card or cash.

Registration opens at 10 AM on Boxing Day morning and is situation next to the Bandstand on Pier Road opposite the RNLI Museum, Whitby.

Event Address – Pier Road, Whitby, North Yorkshire, YO21 3PU. (Please see Google Map below).

If you are lucky enough to win a category, please give your contact details to a Lion’s club member and we will either give you your prize on the day or post it to you.

Event Timings

Registration Tent Opens – 10 AM

Fancy Dress Judging – 10:30 AM

Immediately after the Fancy Dress Judging – Everyone runs into the Sea

Changing Facilities

Changing facilities are provided with male and female buses for dippers to change if required. We recommend that dippers turn up in their fancy dress costume/clothes before the event. Please bring spare clothes with you so you can change into them after the dip. We recommend you a bring towel to dry yourself afterwards and a bag for your wet clothes. We highly recommend you do the dip in an old pair of trainers, as the wet sand can be very cold and there are rocks in the sea that can be dangerous.

Covid-19

If you have registered for the dip and you either have tested positive for Covid-19, you have any symptoms or you have been told to isolate or you are isolating, unfortunately, you will be unable able take part in the event for the safety of others. Further information of Covid-19 symptoms can be found at: www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/symptoms/.

If you are attending the event to watch the dip, again if you either have tested positive for Covid-19, you have any symptoms or you have been told to isolate or you are isolating, unfortunately, you will be unable to attend the event and please for the safety and benefit of others please stay away from the event.

Safety

Once you are in the sea, the volunteers from the Whitby Diving Club will form a perimeter and you should not in ANY circumstances go beyond this perimeter for your own safety. The event will also be watched over from the beach by the volunteers from the Whitby Coastguard Team and our Whitby Lion Members will be patrolling the event. If any incident occurs and a person requires assistance, these teams will get the individual out of the water and preform any first aid that is required. The whole event will be supervised and watched over by First Response Paramedics who can issue first aid as required.

All dippers should be prepared for the cold sea and air temperature of this time of year. Dippers can spend up to 20 minutes in the sea and can either go fully into the sea or up to waist height. Once the signal has been given by the diving team ALL dippers MUST get out of the sea.

After The Event

Warm soup is provided free of charge to registered dippers to help them warm up after the event. In the days/weeks after the event you are responsible for collecting your own sponsorship money and sending to your chosen charity. Whitby Lions will not be able to do this for you.

Burton Agnes Snowdrops in the Woodland
Feb 5 – Mar 6 all-day
Burton Agnes Snowdrops in the Woodland @ Burton Agnes Hall | Driffield | England | United Kingdom

This winter, let the Snowdrop Spectacular at Burton Agnes Hall bring you out of hibernation

Wrap up warmly this winter and enjoy the breathtaking display of snowdrops here.

Every February, thousands of hardy snowdrops push through the cold winter ground to create a magnificent ‘white carpet’ across the woodland floor here at Burton Agnes. Walking peacefully among these makes a truly memorable day out at the end of the long winter. The beautiful little flowers grow in numbers each year and are such a welcome sight. This biblical symbol of hope reminds us that winter eventually gives way to spring, and announces the new season.

Galanthophiles may also like to buy some Burton Agnes-propagated snowdrops ‘in the green’, which is the best way of building a collection.

Please note that in gale force winds the woodland walk will close. Please phone the office on 01262 490 324 if you would like advice.

The woodland is open for walking among the snowdrops from the 5th February to 6th March 2022, from 11am to 4pm daily.
